Compositions FAQs

What is the Compositions section?

The Compositions section is found under Catalog in the Synchtank Admin. It contains all the musical works (compositions) in your system, separate from the sound recordings (Masters).

What information can I add to a Composition?

Each Composition record includes:

  • Composition Information — title, alternative titles, and other header-level details
  • Other Identifiers — external codes such as ISWC or ASCAP identifiers
  • Rights & Legal — legal administration data for the work
  • Creative Metadata — genres, moods, keywords, and other fields used for search and sync
  • Web Site Visibility — controls whether the work appears on the front-end
  • Restricted Permissions — limits access to specific users only

What are Composition Shares?

Composition Shares is where you enter the writer and publisher information for a work, including ownership and collection splits. This data is essential for mechanical licensing and CWR reporting.

How do I enter Composition Shares?

Note: You must save the Composition record first before you can start adding shares.

  1. Open the Composition and go to the Composition Shares tab
  2. Enter the territory for the rights — the system defaults to WORLD
  3. For each writer, enter: Controlled Y/N, writer name, society information, and own/collect values
  4. Add the Original Publisher (E) and Administrator Publisher (AM) for each writer
  5. Click + Add Share to add additional writers
  6. The system displays column totals as you enter data — when all columns reach 100%, the work passes validation
  7. Click Save when done

What is the Default Writer Role?

The Default Writer Role is a pre-set value that automatically fills in the writer role field when you add a new share in the Composition Shares tab. This saves time and ensures consistency across your compositions. You can configure this in Website Settings → Writer Roles.

How do I create a new Composition?

Go to Catalog → Compositions and click the green Create button. Fill in the relevant details, add Composition Shares, and save.

How do I edit an existing Composition?

Find the Composition in the list, click into it, then select the blue Edit icon. Make your changes and save.

Can I merge duplicate Compositions?

Yes. Select the Composition records in the list and click the Merge button. Choose which record to keep, review the fields side by side, select which data to retain, and click Merge.

Note:
Merging cannot be undone, so review carefully before confirming.

Can I bulk edit Compositions?

Yes. Select the Compositions you want to edit and click the pen icon at the top. Edit them individually in the middle panel or apply the same changes to all selected records using the right panel.

How do I run a report on my Compositions?

Go to Reports in the Synchtank Admin, click Create New, and select either Compositions (main metadata) or Composition Shares (writer and publisher information). Apply any filters, save, and download as a CSV file.

Can I bulk edit Compositions using a spreadsheet?

Yes. Run a Compositions report first to get the correct column headings, update the data in Excel, then re-upload via Import Tools → Import Spreadsheet. Do not add, remove, or change the structure of the columns, as this will cause upload errors.
